Be honest, you thought I’d forgotten about all of you, right? Well, I didn’t but somehow last year got very busy and I just wasn’t able to keep up. I know it has been a while but I’m trying to get us back on track here and with the summer holidays approaching fast, I thought this might be a nice possibility to inspire your next holiday planning.
Check out where Shane and I went during our epic roadtrip in the US last year and what cool stuff we saw.
Seid ehrlich, ihr habt gedacht ich hätte euch vergessen, oder? Nunja, hab ich nicht aber letztes Jahr ist irgendwie aus dem Ruder gelaufen und ich hab es einfach nicht geschafft mit dem neuen Tempo Schritt zu halten. Ich weiß es ist nun ne ganze Weile her aber ich versuch dennoch uns wieder in den Rhythmus zu bringen. Außerdem stehen die Sommerferien bald vor der Tür und wer weiß, vielleicht findet ihr in diesem Blog ein wenig Inspiration für die die nächste Reise.
Schaut euch an, wohin es Shane und mich letztes Jahr während unseres legendären Roadtrips hin verschlagen hat und was für coole Sachen wir erlebt haben.
Day 1 / Tag 1
Route: New York to Sandusky, Ohio, 8.5 hours drive
States / Bundesstaaten: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio
Accommodation / Unterkunft: Sunnybrook Trout Club, Sunny Brook Trout Club
Highlights: The trip started with Shane literally taking a toilet break every 30 minutes. For two hours I thought we’ll never get to Ohio at all but his bladder calmed and after a few slowdowns on the road we arrived tired but happy at our first stop. And that Trout Club we stayed was just amazing. Super cute place in a stunning surrounding of lush green gardens with a creek running through it for catching some trout. We had a lovely dinner in the neighboring town and the stunning sunset during dinner was just the right way to end the first evening. Well, after dinner we also used the games room at our accommodation and played pool, darts and listened to old tunes from the funky jukebox they still had.
Der Trip fing damit an, dass Shane alle 30 Minuten eine Toilettenpause einlegen musste. Zwei Stunden lang hab ich schon geglaubt wir würden es niemals nach Ohio schaffen, aber zum Glück hat sich das dann noch eingependelt und wir sind nach einer langen ersten Fahrt froh aber müde in der ersten Unterkunft angekommen. Das war ein Forellen Angler Club mit B&B und total toll. Super süße Unterkunft in einer wunderschönen Gartenanlage wo man im Grünen halt auch in dem Bach Forellen fischen konnte. Im Nachbarort haben wir dann noch ein gutes Abendessen mit einem spektakulären Sonnenuntergang genossen, bevor wir im Spielraum des Forellenclubs den Abend mit einer Runde Billiard und Darts und den Oldie Klängen der Jukebox beendeten.
Day 2 / Tag 2
Route: Sandusky, Ohio to Iowa City, Iowa, 7.5 hours drive

Highlights: There is a lot of corn in Iowa but then it is the state that produced the majority of corn for the world. Besides corn, we started listening to an Audiobook and guess what. The storyline of the this fast paced murder mystery was set in and around Chicago and while we were driving the I-80 the murderer in our audiobook was doing exactly the same! So creepy but cool at the same time. Also, Iowa city was a lovely place to stay. The hotel was cute and had great hip rooms and an excellent gym that you can use as a guest. Downtown Iowa City also looked like a fun town with great book stores, like the Prairie Light Home | Prairie Lights | Iowa City Bookstore which is a must see if you are an aspiring or well established author or simply are a book nerd. But my biggest highlight was the quick pit stop to a town called Riverside, just south of Iowa City. Who knows what you can see in Riverside? Yes, any Trekkie knows this. Riverside is the future birthplace of Captain James T. Kirk and this town really celebrates their soon to be born galactical celebrity.
In Iowa gibt es eine Tonne Mais. Was Sinn macht, denn der Bundesstaat ist dafür bekannt der weltweite Hauptproduzent für Mais zu sein. Da es außer Mais nichts zu sehen gab, fingen wir an Audiobücher zu hören und nun stellt euch das vor. Die Geschichte dieser schnellen und aufregenden Mörder-Mystery spielte in Chicago spielte und als wir so auf der Autobahn I-80 fuhren wurde uns plötzlich bewusst, dass der Mörder aus dem Buch auch genau die gleiche Strecke abfuhr wie wir!!! Wie gruselig ist das denn? Und reiner Zufall! Wir sind dann lebend in Iowa City angekommen, wo wir ein hippes Hotel mit exzellentem Fitnessstudio hatten. Das Ortszentrum von Iowa City sah auch sehr nett aus und hatte einen traumhafte Buchladen, den Prairie Light Buchladen Home | Prairie Lights | Iowa City Bookstore, welcher ein absolutes Muss ist für Autoren, Leseratten und jeden der Bücher gerne mag. Mein größtes Highlight war allerdings der Zwischenstopp zu einem Ort namens Riverside, südlich von Iowa City gelegen. Hat jemand eine Ahnung was man in Riverside, Iowa, sehen kann? Jeder Trekkie sollte jetzt vor Begeisterung aufschreien. Riverside ist der zukünftige Geburtsort von Kapitän James T. Kirk und dieses Örtchen weiß wirklich wie man diese baldige galaktische Berühmtheit feiert.

Route: Iowa City, Iowa to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, 6.5 hours drive

Highlights: Well, Sioux Falls is a real gem and I did not expect that at all. It is a lovely livable town that has just recently gone through a bit of a make over. Big tech companies like google have made Sioux Falls their home and it shows, according to the locals. Money has been pumped into town and you can see why families chose to move there. Take a stroll along the lovely riverwalk that takes you to a small waterfall park and stop in one of the nice restaurants or cafes there. We even attended a free concert before heading for dinner. The whole evening finished in the bar of our super cool hotel which used to be a bank and still kept all those vibes. That means you had to walk through the vault in order to get to the bar. How cool is that?
Sioux Falls war eine echte Überraschung. Es ist ein hübscher Ort in dem es sich gut leben lässt und welcher einige Veränderung durchgemacht hat in den letzten Jahren. Große Tech-Firmen wie Google haben Sioux Falls zu ihrem Zuhause gemacht. Viel Geld ist geflossen und das kann man sehen. Man kann gemütlich am Fluss entlang spazieren, der durch das Städtchen fließt und es ist kein Wunder, dass viele Familien sich entschieden haben nach Iowa City zu ziehen. Wenn man dem Fluss folgt kommt man zu einem netter Wasserfall Park und kann entlang des Ufers in einem der vielen Restaurants und Cafes rasten. Wir haben sogar ein kostenloses Konzert mitgenommen bevor es zum Abendessen ging. Den Abend haben wir dann in unserer coolen Hotelbar ausklingen lassen. Unser Hotel war nämlich mal eine Bank und viele der Original Merkmale sind beibehalten worden, wie beispielsweise der riesige Banktresor durch welchen man laufen musste um in die Bar zu kommen. Das war schon ziemlich cool.
Day 4 / Tag 4
Route: Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Rapid City, South Dakota, 5.5 hours drive

Highlights: If you love corn, you’ll love South Dakota. There is literally nothing else for miles. There is so much corn in this state that they build a palace with it. Yes, you are reading this right. We visited the Corn palace, Mitchell Corn Palace, SD | Official Website in Mitchell and while you think the whole place smells of popcorn and obviously must be made of corn, it is just the murals that cover the inside and outside of it and show the importance corn had for the state and the people of South Dakota. Now that’s something I haven’t seen before. Next highlight was the visit to the Minuteman Missile Site, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). We got a great history lesson from a ranger and former worker in one of the missile control centers during the Cold War, when a vast arsenal of 1000 nuclear missiles were hidden in plain sight in the Great Plains. Today only 100 remain and are a reminder that these missiles can destroy civilizations, but that they are also a way to keep the peace, because if you don’t push the button, I won’t push the button. When the guard heard that Shane is working with the Irish on the Security Council for the UN, he gave him a remembrance coin and even thanked Shane for his service. How nice was that? Our next highlight was just an hour away and I’ll let the photos do the talking here when you have a look at how beautiful the Badlands, Badlands National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), are. This National Park is one unique area and you can spend hours there being mesmerized by these geological formations that look like rainbows have been painted on them. Careful getting too close to the high grass though because rattlesnakes love snoozing in those. Luckily I only got close once and backed away immediately when I heard a strange rattle in the grass. And thanks to our beloved GPS guide Guide Along, Audio Tour Guide App | GuideAlong, (we never go anywhere without him), we had a fantastic ride through the park.
Wenn ihr Mais mögt, dann seid ihr in South Dakota genau richtig. Da gibt’s nämlich nichts anderes, soweit das Auge reicht. In South Dakota gibt es so viel davon, dass die dort sogar einen Palast damit gebaut haben. Jupp, richtig gelesen. Und den Maispalast haben wir in Mitchell besucht: Mitchell Corn Palace, SD | Official Website. Das Ding ist so bizarr. Erstmal riecht da alles nach Popcorn und dann hängen da überall Wandgemälde, die aus Maiskörnern gemacht wurden. Im Endeffekt ist nicht alles aus Mais gebaut, sondern “nur” die Wandgemälde, aber dennoch muss das vor Dekaden sehr eindrucksvoll gewesen sein als South Dakota der Welt zeigen wollte wie wichtig Mais für den Bundesstaat und die Menschen in der Region ist. Das nächste Highlight war ein Besuch der Minuteman Missile Site, Minuteman Missile National Historic Site (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). Dort haben wir eine beeindruckende Kalter Krieg Geschichtsstunde von einem Parkwächter und ehemaligen Arbeiter in einem dieser Raketenbunker erhalten. Während des Kalten Krieges wurde Nuklear aufgerüstet und in den USA wurde ein Arsenal von Tausenden Nuklearraketen in den Great Plains versteckt. Heute gibt es davon noch 100 Raketen und diese sind eine stetige Erinnerung daran dass Nuklearraketen nicht nur ganze Zivilisationen zerstören können, sondern auch als ein Mittel des Friedens benutzt werden, denn solange wir den roten Knopf nicht drücken, werden die anderen den Knopf auch nicht drücken. Als der Ranger dann hörte, dass Shane für die Iren im Sicherheitsrat der UN in New York arbeitete, gab er ihm eine Erinnerungsmünze und hat Shane für seinen Dienst gedankt. Dann ging zum nächsten Highlight (mensch an dem Tag haben wir echt viel erlebt), welches gerade mal eine Stunde entfernt lag und hier lass ich am besten die Fotos sprechen, denn Worte können kaum beschreiben wie einmalig die Landschaft im Badlands Nationalpark ist: Badlands National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). Hier kann man wirklich Stunden verbringen und sich von den geologischen Formationen verzaubern lassen, die wie gemalte Regenbögen aussehen. Aber Achtung: geht nicht zu dicht an das Steppengras heran, denn Klapperschlangen lieben das hohe Gras um sich auszuruhen. Zum Glück bin ich denen nur einmal zu nahe gekommen und habe das merkwürdige Klappern zum Anlass genommen, ganz schnell Abstand zu gewinnen. Und Dank unserem geliebten GPS Führers Guide Along, Audio Tour Guide App | GuideAlong, (ohne den fahren wir in keine Nationalparks) hatten wir mal wieder eine fantastische und super informative Fahrt.
Day 5 / Tag 5
Route: Exploring Rapid City and neighboring sites

Highlights: We had a full day planned for our stay in Rapid City and after a fantastic breakfast in a local coffee shop, we started with the Chapel on the Hills, Chapel in the Hills, Rapid City, SD (chapel-in-the-hills.org), which is build completely out of wood and is a replica of the 850 year old Borgund Church in Norway. You think you have seen churches but this one is different and worth a quick visit. From there we went on to the Hill City, Visit Hill City, SD – Black Hills Vacation Destination (visithillcitysd.com), and into the Black Hills. Hill City is a cute and quaint mountain town that offers a scenic ride in a 1880 steam train, 1880 Train :: 2023 Season, you should take if you have the time. It’s also a great stop if you are a biker and want to stretch your legs and have a cone of ice cream or a cold drink. After that we headed to the Crazy Horse Memorial, Home of the Crazy Horse Memorial : Crazy Horse Memorial®, for a bit of Native History. Make sure to stop here and learn about the mission to protect and preserve the culture, tradition and living heritage of the North American Indians. And watch in awe as the monument is still taking shape in front of you. After all this history, we wanted some more views and got those on our drive through Custer State Park, Custer State Park | South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks (sd.gov), and the Needles Scenic Highway, Needles Highway: Explore a Natural Wonder at Custer State Park (travelsouthdakota.com), that brought us to Sylvan Lake, Sylvan Lake | Black Hills & Badlands – South Dakota (blackhillsbadlands.com), for a lovely energizing stroll, through tight tunnels and nose to nose with the local wildlife. What a great place to spend a holiday! Last stop on our day trip was Mount Rushmore, Mount Rushmore Tours | Visiting Mount Rushmore (mountrushmoresociety.com), a place that was more impressive than I thought and that reminded me a lot of China, with its big highway leading up to the monument and the feeling of patriotism walking towards the heads of four formative American Presidents. Also, you can see those presidents as life size bronze statues in Rapid City where all of them line the main street downtown in the Walk of Presidents, City of Presidents | VisitRapidCity.com. Pick one of the presidents and take a photo, you’ll probably never be as close again. South Dakota surprised me in so many ways and I am glad we went!
Wir hatten ein volles Programm geplant für unseren Tag in Rapid City und nach einem wunderbaren Frühstück in einem kleinen Coffee Shop ging es los zur Kapelle auf dem Hügel: Chapel in the Hills, Rapid City, SD (chapel-in-the-hills.org), die komplett aus Holz gebaut ist und eine Replika der 850 Jahre alten Borgund Kirche in Norwegen ist. Da glaubt man, alle Kirchen gesehen zu haben und dann sieht man sowas. Absolut sehenswert. Von dort ging es nach Hill City, Visit Hill City, SD – Black Hills Vacation Destination (visithillcitysd.com), und in die Black Hills (ja, da gibts auch ein Lied das so heisst). Hill City ist ein hübsches Örtchen in den Bergen wo man eine idyllische Fahrt in einer Dampflok aus dem Jahr 1880 machen kann: 1880 Train :: 2023 Season. Wir hatten leider keine Zeit für eine Runde aber soll sehr toll sein. Hill City ist auch der perfekte Ort für alle Motorradfahrer die sich nach stundenlanger Fahrt mal die Beine vertreten wollen und Lust auf eine Eistüte oder ein kühles Getränk haben. Danach gings weiter zum Crazy Horse Monument, Home of the Crazy Horse Memorial : Crazy Horse Memorial®, um unser Wissen um die amerikanischen Ureinwohner aufzufrischen. Das ist ein Stopp den ihr unbedingt einplanen müsst. Da fährt man nichts ahnend durch die Landschaft und sieht plötzlich die Form eines riesigen weißen Pferdekopfes in den Bergen. Auch wenn das Monument noch lange nicht fertiggestellt sein wird ist es schon jetzt sehr imposant! Nach dieser Geschichtsstunde gings szenisch weiter durch den Custer State Park Custer State Park | South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks (sd.gov) und dem Needles Scenic Highway Needles Highway: Explore a Natural Wonder at Custer State Park, welcher uns für einen Pitstopp zum Sylvan Lake Sylvan Lake | Black Hills & Badlands – South Dakota brachte wo wir entlang des Ufers schlenderten und hunderte Fotos machten. Was bei dem Anblick aber auch selbstverständlich war. Toller Ort zum Urlauben. Letzter Stopp unseres Tagestrips war dann Mount Rushmore Mount Rushmore Tours | Visiting Mount Rushmore. Ich hatte nicht zu viel erwartet. Ich meine, Köpfe von Präsidenten ineinander Berg gemeißelt klingt schon komisch aber das ganze Ding war weitaus imposanter als ich mir vorstellen konnte. Ind erinnerte mich witzigerweise sehr stark an unsere Zeit in China. Mit den riesigen Straßen die zum Monument führten und perfekt für große Paraden waren und der patriotischen Flaggenallee mit Blick auf die Köpfe der vier bedeutsamen Präsidenten. Diese Präsidenten kann man übrigens auch als lebensgroße Bronzestatuen in Rapid City sehen. Dort gibts auf der Hauptstraße den Walk of Presidents City of Presidents | VisitRapidCity.com und ihr könnt Euch einen der Präsidenten aussuchen und ein selfie machen. So nah kommt man denen wahrscheinlich nicht nochmal. South Dakota hat mich wirklich überrascht und ich bin echt froh, dass wir den kleinen Umweg gemacht haben.
Day 6 / Tag 6
Route: Rapid City, South Dakota to Boulder, Colorado, 7 hours drive

Highlights: This was an adventurous ride. It all started easy peasy when we reached Nebraska and stopped at a place called Carhenge, CARHENGE, in Alliance. It’s a cool photo-op if you are in the area and don’t mind a little detour. Unfortunately it is a bit out and somehow google let us down for the first time by taking us off the main road and onto a dirt road with sharp stones and deep potholes. So, the 30 kilometer stretch turned into a one hour drive with 20km/h because I was too afraid to go faster and risk a puncture in the middle of nowhere. Eventually we reached Scotts Bluff National Monument, Scotts Bluff National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), where we learnt a lot about the Oregon Trail, that was used by pioneers between 1841 and 1869 on their way to the west of the US. There we had a nice chat with a ranger who thought out Diplomatic car number plates were interesting and who informed us that a big storm formation was coming towards us and if we wanted to make it to Colorado, we should leave right now. Which we did but the storm moved very quickly and suddenly the sky went dark, lightning hit the Prairie grounds loudly around us and when tumbleweed started to roll in front of us, we knew the 100 km strong winds were a sign for something big. There was nowhere to find shelter, no bridges or towns, so we did the only thing we could: pressed the foot down on the gas pedal, listened to the local weather station for tornado warning and somehow managed to outrun the storm. After that, the ride was easy but when we arrived in Boulder, I was glad to take a shower and fall asleep in a comfy bed.
Na also das war wirklich eine abenteuerliche Fahrt. Es fing alles ganz ruhig und relaxt an als wir über die Bundesstaatsgrenze von Nebraska fuhren. Wir hielten in Alliance an, um uns Carhenge CARHENGE anzusehen. Das ist genau das, was ihr denkt. Statt Steinen wie in Stonehenge, hat ein Künstler Autos aufeinander gestapelt und Stonehenge nachgebaut. Coole Gelegenheit ein Foto zu schießen, trotz Umweges. Leider ist das ein wenig abseits gewesen und Google hat uns dann zum ersten Mal im Stich gelassen als es uns von der Hauptstraße führte und auf eine Kiesstraße mit spitzen Steinen und tiefen Schlaglöchern. Die 30 Kilometer Strecke zu unserem nächsten Highlight wurde zu einer einstündigen Fahrt bei 20kmh weil ich zu viel Angst hatte schneller zu fahren und eventuell einen Platten irgendwo im nirgendwo in Nebraska zu haben. Nach einer gefühlten Ewigkeit kamen wir dann endlich am Scotts Bluff National Monument Scotts Bluff National Monument (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov) an, wo wir alles über den Oregon Trail lernten. Eine Strecke welche die Pioniere zwischen 1841 und 1869 nahmen auf ihrem Weg gen Westen. Im Besucherzentrum hatten wir eine ganz liebe Unterhaltung mit einem der Ranger unsere Diplomaten-Kennzeichen am Auto interessant fand und uns dann noch vor einem schnell herankommenden Sturm warnte. Er riet uns sich am besten direkt auf den Weg nach Colorado zu machen wenn wir dem Sturm ausweichen wollten. Gesagt, getan. Allerdings war der Sturm um einiges schneller als gedacht und plötzlich wurde es stockduster um uns herum. Blitze jagten über die Prärie und trafen Boden laut um uns herum in unserem Volvo und Steppenläufer (diese Diestelartigen Heuballen die man aus Westernfilmen kennt) rollten vor uns über die Straßen. Als die Windgeschwindigkeit um uns herum 100kmh erreichte war uns klar, dass dieser Sturm ein starker sein würde. Und um uns herum gabs keinen Ort um Unterschlupf zu finden. Keine Brücken oder Örtchen soweit das Auge reichte. Es gab also nur eins was wir machen konnten: Fuß aufs Gaspedal drücken und den lokalen Wetterbericht auf Tornadowarnungen anmachen. Irgendwie schafften wir es dann dem Sturm wegzufahren und danach gings wieder ganz relaxt im Sonnenschein weiter bis wir es zu unserer nächsten Station in Boulder, Colorado, geschafft hatten. Und da hieß es dann eine heiße Dusche nehmen und erschöpft ins gemütliche Bett fallen.
Day 7 / Tag 7
Route: Boulder, Colorado

Highlights: Ever been to Tajikistan? Well, if the trip to the east is too far for you, go to Boulder and visit the Dushanbe Teahouse, Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse (boulderteahouse.com). 25 years ago, the mayor of Dushanbe visited and decided to build a teahouse in Boulder to celebrate the establishment of sister city ties. And while Boulder built a coffee shop in Dushanbe which closed only after a short while, Boulder still has this amazing Teahouse that also serves fabulous food and makes you forget that you are in the US. The rest of the day was spent strolling around the town, which is absolutely lovely and I can totally understand why people want to live in Boulder. You are close to the Rocky Mountains for nature and hiking and you are less than an hour away from Denver if you need big city feel. So we took it easy, had drinks and a nice dinner to end the day.
Schonmal in Tajikistan gewesen? Wenn der Trip in den Osten zu weit weg ist für Euren Geschmack, könnt ihr auch nach Boulder kommen und das Dushanbe Teehaus Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse (boulderteahouse.com) besuchen. Vor 25 Jahren hat der Bürgermeister von Dushanbe Boulder besucht und entschieden dort ein Teehaus bauen zu lassen um den neu geschaffenen Status als Partnerstädte zu zelebrieren. Und während Boulder zeitgleich ein Cafe in Dushanbe bauen ließ welches frühzeitig geschlossen wurde, steht das atemberaubende Teehaus noch heute in prächtigen Farben in Boulder und serviert überdies auch noch sehr leckeres Essen. Da kann man glatt vergessen, dass man in Amerika ist. Für den Rest des Tages flanierten wir die Fußgängerzone entlang und genossen einfach die frische Bergluft, die entspannte Atmosphäre und konnten schon nach ein paar Stündchen nachvollziehen, warum so viele Leute nach Boulder ziehen wollten. Dort ist man nicht nur den Rocky Mountains so nah um in wilder Natur wandern zu gehen, sondern auch nur ne knappe halbe Stunde von Denver entfernt wenn man ein wenig Großstadtgefühl haben will. Wir ließen es ruhig angehen und beendeten den Tag mit gut gemixten Drinks und einem schmackhaften Abendessen.

Route: Boulder, Colorado to Colorado Springs, Colorado, 2.5 hours drive

Highlights: On our way down, we stopped at the Red Rocks Amphitheater, Homepage – Red Rocks Amphitheatre (redrocksonline.com), where you can get a ticket for a concert and enjoy some music in an absolutely fascinating environment under the stars. Unfortunately they were prepping for a concert of the Dixie Chicks that evening, so we couldn’t go into the stadium but even the area around it was spectacular to look at. After that we reached our main destination of this trip. The plan was to stay in Colorado Springs for a week and just do a few day trips from there and give Shane a chance to get some golf in.
Auf unserem Weg stoppten wir beim Red Rocks Amphitheater, Homepage – Red Rocks Amphitheatre (redrocksonline.com), wo man Live Konzerten unter dem Sternenhimmel und zwischen diesem phänomenalen roten Gestein lauschen kann. Leider bereiteten die sich gerade für ein Konzert der Dixie Chicks vor und das bedeutete wir konnten nicht in das Amphitheater rein. Die Gegend drum herum war aber auch so sehr beeindruckend zu sehen. Anschließend erreichten wir das Ziel unseres Trips. Der Plan war nun für fünf Tage in Colorado SPrings zu bleiben und von dort ein paar Tagestrips zu machen und Shane die Gelegenheit zu geben ein wenig Golf zu spielen.

Highlights: Shane started the day with golf and I got some writing time in. Afterwards we went to check out the Manitou Dwellings, Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Manitou Springs, CO (cliffdwellingsmuseum.com), that are comprised of ancestral puebloan ruins that are 800 to 1000 years old. After that we went to the Garden of Gods, Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center in Colorado Springs (gardenofgods.com), for a stroll in a fascinating natural scenery before we finished the day with pizza at Pizzeria Rustica, Pizzeria Rustica.
Der Tag begann für Shane mit Golf und für mich mit Zeit zum Schreiben. Anschließend gings kulturell weiter als wir uns die Manitou Dwellings Manitou Cliff Dwellings, Manitou Springs, CO (cliffdwellingsmuseum.com) anschauten. Das sind Ruinen von alten Behausungen die von den Ureinwohnern Amerikas vor rund 800 bis 1000 Jahren gebaut wurden. Danach wartete das nächste Highlight auf uns. Der Garten der Götter Garden of the Gods Visitor & Nature Center in Colorado Springs (gardenofgods.com), mit spektakulären Felsformationen und tollen Wanderwegen. Danach gönnten wir uns dann noch eine Pizza Pizzeria Rustica bevor wir halbtot aber glücklich ins Bett fiel.

Highlights: Shane had another golf morning. Afterwards we went to see the Air Force Academy, Visitors • United States Air Force Academy (usafa.edu), and if I had US citizenship and if I’d be a bit younger, I would have signed up for it. Their advertisement video is really doing a great job and honestly, motion sickness isn’t an issue on fighter jets, right? LOL
Shanne hatte noch einen Golf Morgen während ich ganz genüsslich den Morgen im Bett verbrachte. Danach gings zur Air Force Akademie Visitors • United States Air Force Academy (usafa.edu) und ich muss Euch sagen, wenn ich Amerikanerin und ein wenig jünger wäre hatte ich mich direkt einschreiben lassen. Also deren Werbevideo ist wirklich toll gelungen und wenn ich so drüber nachdenke, Reiseübelkeit gibt es in Düsenjets bestimmt nicht, oder? LOL

Highlights: We had a great start of the day playing some Top Golf. And I wasn’t even that bad. After all that exercising, we were in dire need of another pool session and I even managed to get a short massage treatment in. What a way to end finish our stay in Colorado.
Der Tag begann mit Indoor Golf für uns beide und ich muss sagen, ich war gar nicht so schlecht fürs erste Mal. Nach all dem Sport sehnten wir uns nach einen Nachmittag am Pool und ich habs sogar geschafft noch einen Massage zu kriegen. Perfekter Abschluss zu unserer Zeit in Colorado.

Highlights: Ever seen the world’s largest easel? No? Then you should take a quick look when passing by the small town of Goodland, World’s Largest Easel, Goodland, Kansas (roadsideamerica.com). The easel is indeed very large and shows the world famous sunflower painting by Van Gogh. We reached Topeka without any issues but when we arrived we weren’t sure if we had missed the news and a zombie apocalypse was upon us. Topeka, the capitol of Kansas, was dead. Not a soul on the streets. It wasn’t an apocalypse and just a normal weekday evening in Kansas as the waiter in our hotel restaurant assured us. Still spooky.
Jemals die weltgrößte Staffelei gesehen? Nein? Dann solltet ihr einen schnellen Blick drauf werfen wenn ihr Euch in Goodland, Kansas, aufhaltet World’s Largest Easel, Goodland, Kansas (roadsideamerica.com). Die Staffelei ist wirklich groß und zeigt das weltberühmte Gemälde der Sonnenblumen von Van Gogh. Wir erreichten Topeka ohne Probleme aber als wir ankamen waren wir uns nicht sicher ob wir die Nachrichten verpasst hatten dass die Zombie Apokalypse begonnen hatte. Topeka, die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Kansas, war tot. Es rührte sich nichts auf den Straßen. Doch es war keine Zombie Apokalypse sondern nur ein normaler Abend unter der Woche, wie uns der Kellner im Hotelrestaurant bestätigte. Trotzdem gruselig.
Day 14 / Tag 14
Route: Topeka, Kansas to Dayton, Ohio, 10 hours drive

Highlights: We had to make a change to our original route. Unfortunately there were still severe flood warnings for Kentucky and with a big rain front moving over the state, we didn’t want to jinx anything. So instead of going through Kentucky, we decided to take a more northern route and make camp in Ohio. On that day, we didn’t get any sightseeing in. It was just driving and making mileage. Only crazy thing that happened was that, at 90 km/h I had to go around a ladder on a busy highway that must have fallen off someone’s van and landed right in the middle of it. Insane!
Wir mussten unsere geplante Route anpassen. Leider gab es nämlich noch immer Flutwarnungen in Kentucky und mit einer riesigen Regenfront auf dem Anmarsch über dem gesamten Bundesstaat, wollten wir das Risiko nicht eingehen. Statt durch Kentucky zu fahren, entschieden wir uns die nördliche Strecke zu nehmen und in Ohio zu übernachten. An diesem Tag hatten wir keine Zeit zur Sehenswürdigkeiten. Es hieß Kilometer machen. Das einzige Verrückte das passierte war, dass ich auf der Autobahn bei 90 km/h plötzlich einer Leiter ausweichen musste, die scheinbar kurz vorher von einem Truck gefallen war und nun in der Mittelspur lag. Total verrückt!

Route: Dayton, Ohio to Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, 6.5 hours drive

Highlights: Thanks to our detour to Dayton, we managed to stay the night in the former patent capital of the US. Nowhere else were patents for inventions made more than here, Things invented in Dayton: Airplane, cash register, parachute and more (daytondailynews.com). Which explains why you’ll find the historic Wright Brother’s site, Visitor Centers – Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), here as well. They came from Dayton and did all their calculations and first tries of flight without jumping off sand dunes in Kitty Beach here. Check out the historic site, it is really worth the visit. We had a lovely chat with one of the rangers again, who gave Shane an aviation pin as a souvenir. Another cool thing, from there you can watch the next generation of young pilots train to take off and land in big military planes at the nearby base. After that it was countryside in Pennsylvania. We stayed at the home of former US President James Buchanan, unfortunately better known as the worst president in the history of the US, James Buchanan | The White House. But the hotel was absolutely lovely. We were the only guests that night and the owners made sure that we were the happiest and the food in their adjacent restaurant was to die for!
Dank unseres Umweges nach Dayton, Ohio, haben wir die Nacht in der ehemaligen Patent Hauptstadt Amerikas verbracht. Nirgendwo sonst wurden so viele Patente für Erfindungen angemeldet als hier, Things invented in Dayton: Airplane, cash register, parachute and more (daytondailynews.com). Was auch das historische Gelände der Wright Brüder erklärt, Visitor Centers – Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), welches sich ebenfalls in Dayton befindet. Dort kamen sie nämlich her und haben all ihre Kalkulationen gemacht und erste Flugversuche ausprobiert ohne wie am berühmten Kitty Strand von Dünen zu springen. Das historische Gelände ist wirklich einen Besuch wert. Wir hatten wieder eine ganz tolle Unterhaltung mit einem Ranger vor Ort, der Shane dann auch noch einen Pin fürs Revers als Andenken gab. Eine weitere coole Sache, von dort kann man nämlich auch die nächste General an Piloten sehen wie sie auf dem nahegelegenen Militärflughafen Start- und Landemanöver in diesen riesigen Militärflugzeugen trainierten. Im Anschluss hieß es zurück in die Natur auf dem Weg nach Pennsylvania. Dort haben wir im ehemaligen Haus des US Präsidenten James Buchanan übernachtet, der leider dafür bekannt ist der schlechteste Präsident in der Geschichte Amerikas gewesen zu sein, James Buchanan | The White House. Das Hotel war dafür ganz toll. Wir waren die einzigen Gäste und die Inhaber haben sich fas ein Bein ausgerissen um es uns so angenehm wie möglich zu machen. Das Hotelrestaurant war ebenfalls ein Glücksgriff gewesen.
Day 16 / Tag 16
Route: Mercersburg, Pennsylvania to Ocean City, Maryland

Highlights: After a sleep in, we got a delicious coffee nearby and managed to find ourselves in a super interesting conversation with a local county council man who had a stand and was answering questions on how to improve and help Mercersburg and the neighborhood. We learnt so much from him about rural Pennsylvania and told him about things we had seen in Europe and Asia, so maybe one of our experiences will help him find solutions to keep small towns in Pennsylvania running. In Ocean City, we met up with some friends, Aoife, Sagal and Brian, and stayed in an Air B’n’B right at the boardwalk. The location was amazing but our home was a bit rundown. It’s okay for a few nights but the place was damp and cold. We managed though by having a great night out with good food and a long night singing songs in a local karaoke bar.
Nach einer guten Nachtruhe gabs erstmal nen starken Kaffee im Cafe um die Ecke wo wir uns unerwarteterweise in einer Unterhaltung mit einem lokalen Landrat wiederfanden. Der hatte dort einen Stand um Fragen zur Zukunft der Region zu beantworten. Da haben wir einiges über die Region und das ländliche Pennsylvania gelernt und uns darüber ausgetauscht wie es andere Länder in Europa und Asien machen. Vielleicht hilft das ja der Region um Mercersburg und die kleinen Örtchen in Pennsylvania. In Ocean City trafen wir dann auch unsere Freunde Aoife, Sagal und Brian fürs Wochenende. Dort hatten wir ein Air B’n’B direkt an der Strandpromenade gemietet. Der Standpunkt war genial aber die Unterkunft leider eher etwas heruntergekommen. Es okay für zwei Nächte aber die Wohnung war feucht und kühl. Das alles spielte aber keine Rolle nach einem Abend mit gutem Essen und einer langen Nacht die wir singend in einer Karaokebar verbrachten.

Highlights: Seeing the wild horses on Assateague Island, Assateague Island National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov), were my highlights. Who knew you could see wild horses roaming at the beach in Maryland?
Mein Highlight waren die wilden Pferde der Assateague Insel Assateague Island National Seashore (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov). Wer hätte gedacht, dass man in Maryland wilde Pferde am Strand umherstreifen sehen kann.
Day 18 / Tag 18
Route: Ocean City, Maryland to New York City, New York, 5 hours drive

Highlights: Before we sat down to drive those five hours back home, we had breakfast and went for a stroll in the nearby town, called Berlin!!!!! I know, insane, right? I basically just wanted to go there because of the name and while Berlin, Maryland, cannot be compared to my hometown, Berlin, Germany, it was a nice way to end our vacation.
Bevor wir uns auf den Weg zurück nach New York machten, hielten wir noch für ein Frühstück und einen Spaziergang im Nachbarörtchen an der Berlin hieß!!! Verrückt, oder? Ich wollte eigentlich nur wegen des Namens dorthin und während Berlin, Maryland, nicht mit meiner Heimatstadt verglichen werden kann, war es dennoch eine nette Art unseren Urlaub abzuschließen.
